Backflow incense burners
Backflow incense burner gift guide for Christmas 2026 (UK)
Buying a backflow incense burner as a Christmas gift? How to pick a design, which cones to add, gift sets that work, and when to order for UK delivery.
A backflow incense burner makes a good Christmas gift for someone who likes incense, interesting ornaments, or a theme like dragons, fantasy or quirky homeware. The key is to pick a design that suits them, add proper backflow cones so it works on Christmas Day, and order in good time. For Christmas 2026, aim to order by mid-December and check our delivery page for current timings.
Who it suits
A backflow burner is a decorative piece first. Even when it's not in use, it sits on a shelf as an ornament. That makes it a good fit for:
- people who already burn incense and would enjoy a new way to use it
- fans of dragons, fantasy, sea monsters or mythology
- anyone who likes unusual homeware and conversation pieces
- people who enjoy a cosy evening in and like scent in the home
It's probably not the right gift for someone who lives with pets that have breathing problems, someone with asthma, or a household with small children who can reach shelves. If you're not sure, a cone burner ornament they can display without lighting is a gentler choice, or go for something else entirely.
Choosing a design
Match their interests
This is where backflow burners shine as gifts. There's a design for most tastes.
- Dragon and fantasy fans: a dragon emerging from cliffs, or a kraken on a diver's helmet.
- Nature lovers: a tree man pouring smoke into a pond, or a woodland mushroom scene.
- Classic and calm styles: bronze-effect hands holding lotus flowers, or Buddha figures with flowers.
- Minimal tastes: a simple black pool-to-pool design or a ceramic teapot and cup.

Think about size
Check the product dimensions before you buy. A tall figure burner of around 17–18cm makes a statement on a sideboard. A compact burner under 10cm fits a small shelf or a desk. Smaller burners suit smaller spaces and student rooms.
Resin or ceramic
Most of our detailed figure burners are resin, which allows for fine detail and painted or bronze-effect finishes. Our teapot burner is ceramic. Both work well. Resin designs need a gentle clean, so it's worth including a note about that. See how to clean a backflow incense burner.
Add the right cones
This is the most important part. A backflow burner needs backflow cones, which have a hollow channel and a hole in the base. Normal incense cones won't flow down. Our burners are sold without cones unless the product page says otherwise, so add a box.
- Standard backflow cones suit most burners, including small ones. Our Satya boxes contain six packets of one scent.
- Jumbo backflow cones suit larger burners with a wide top and burn for longer.
A cone typically burns for around 10–15 minutes, depending on size, so a box gives plenty of goes. Our guide to choosing backflow incense cones explains how to match cones to a burner.
Gift set ideas
You don't need a ready-made bundle. Picking a burner and cones yourself lets you match them to the person.
For the dragon fan: a dragon or kraken burner plus a box of Dragons Fire backflow cones from Satya.
For someone new to incense: a simple pool-to-pool or hand and lotus burner plus a familiar scent like Rose.
For a big statement piece: a tall figure burner plus a tray of jumbo backflow cones.
A small stocking filler: a compact backflow burner on its own, or a cone burner ornament.
Festive cone burners
If you want something seasonal, our Christmas-themed cone burners use normal incense cones. Smoke rises from the chimney rather than flowing down. When they're not in use, they work as festive ornaments for shelves and windowsills (well away from anything that could catch fire if lit).

Make it work on the day
Backflow can disappoint if it's set up badly, which is the last thing you want with a gift. A few tips to pass on:
- Put it somewhere still, away from radiators, open windows and fans.
- Line the hole in the cone up with the hole in the burner.
- Light the tip, let it flame for a few seconds, then blow it out.
- Give it a minute or two to start flowing.
- Never leave it burning unattended.
You could print or send our guide on how to use a backflow incense burner. If the smoke goes up instead of down, the troubleshooting checklist covers the usual causes. Busy Christmas rooms with the heating on and doors opening are a common one.
A word on safety for gift-givers
Incense produces smoke and fine particles. If you're buying for someone, it's worth knowing:
- it should be burned in a ventilated room
- it should be kept away from children and pets
- anyone with pets that have breathing problems should ask their vet first
- it should never be left burning unattended, especially around Christmas trees, cards and decorations
